ABOUT CHENNAI International Airport

Located south of Chennai in the suburb of Tirusulam, India, you will find the Chennai International Airport (also referred to as Anna International Airport). This superior facility has the distinction of ranking as the largest in India as well as one of the largest cargo hubs in the country. Chennai International Airport brings almost sixty-five years of providing stellar service while ensuring a warm welcome to passengers from all over the globe.

In its infancy, Meenambakkam Airport was its original name, which took its origin from the suburb of the same name. A newly constructed terminal was built and the airport adopted its new name in honor of Former Late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C.N. Annadurai (Anna International Airport).

Chennai International generates more than the third highest airport economy in India today and grows continuously. Constructed of several terminals, as well as a newly renovated original terminal, Chennai provides several aerobridges in addition to new passenger terminal complexes. The airport also serves as a major transport link with the Suburban Railway network as well as the Grand Southern Trunk Road. Future plans involve connecting a Metro rail system as well.

Chennai International Airport recently completed a massive expansion project plan, which involved new taxiways, new terminals as well as a new runway. The expansion plan included acreage of neighboring Kolapakkam, Gerugambakkan, Tharapakkam as well as Manapakkam providing future added business and income to these areas of India. In addition, part of the added technology involves a new cargo system increasing its already significant cargo business. The total acreage of the impressive facility now totals over a 1,800-acre area. The new expansion also increased the flights per hour to over 50. Daily aircraft positioning is over 325, with future estimations projected to more than 13 million domestic passengers and 4 million international passengers through its fine gates.

This premiere International Airport not only provides excellent passenger service, the amenities and many businesses housed under its roof are awesome in number, quality and diversity. Over 60 concessions including free telephone service, free medical and health scan facilities as well as free passenger trolley service. Also included are many information and service counters such as car rental and taxi counters and a railway center. Passengers may also have access to an exclusive executive lounge, a retiring room with dormitories, restaurants and other eating establishments, an art center as well as an infant lobby. Also provided are currency exchanges, ATM machines, a duty free shop, gift and requisite shop, bookstalls as well as a pharmacy.

Chennai International Airport not only has a long service history, its honorable reputation and innovative attitude reflected by its many titles of "firsts" for an International Airport. It is proudly first to supply mineral water in its domestic terminal, the first to provide environmentally safe paper cups, as well as the first domestic terminal to construct aerobridges. In addition, The Indian Guild of Professional Architects awarded the airport the "Best Airport - Domestic Terminal". The President of India awarded this proud and honorable distinction to the airport.

Always innovative and technologically advances in its operation, the Chennai International Airport continues to pursue towards much advancement and future plans. Proving to be environmentally conscious is another fine example of this premiere airports forward way of thinking. It's proud reputation and many accolades serves as a fine example of the airports concern and attention to its local economy as well as its ever-increasing global community. The future can only hold many impressive "firsts", as this fine airport continues on its road to soaring heights, both in the air and on the ground.
